Scene: Devilock – Lost Paradise

"This track called 'Lost Paradise' was originally composed in 1993 with Fasttracker on PC."

“‘Lost Paradise’ was originally composed in 1993 with Fasttracker on PC. I imported it via the MOD import function to the Polyend Tracker. It sounded terrible and played at half speed first. So I replaced all samples with new ones, which were almost the same sounds but sampled in much higher quality. I also had to increase the tempo to 200 BPM, so it played at the correct speed. The thing is, it still sounded horrible. Because my original samples were all in different sample rates, the notes did not represent the correct pitch using the new samples. Long story short it was a lot of work to rearrange the song in the end. But it sounds quite original as the original composition from 1993. The audio you hear in the video is directly recorded from the Tracker without post-processing.”

“The project makes very little use of the fx possibilities of the tracker, it uses many one-shot samples and is pretty complex in terms of songwriting, it‘s fun to do complete songs with the tracker. For the arpeggio-like lead sound, I sampled a kalimba (just one note) using the built-in sampler and a microphone. The tune itself is a very 90ish progressive synth-pop song and if you listen closely you can hear my influences from progressive rock bands like the early Genesis (Dance On A Volcano) or Rush. So I hope ya like the tune and you find some useful samples and arrangement tricks in there!”

Devilock

“I started composing music with computers in 1989 when I finally got my Commodore 64 after a lot of crying and begging to my parents. I was immediately blown away by the sound of the SID chip inside the C64 and started to compose tunes for crack intros and demos with tracker software. Today I still compose SID tunes for demos, intros, and new games coming up on the Commodore 64. I was a member of many cracking/demogroups like 711, X-rated, Talent, Cyberpunx, or TRSi and still am a member of Arsenic and Oxyron. In 2020 I released a SID chiptune album called “Cause Of Death” which is a collection of songs I wrote during the last 10 years on the C64.

Since 1992 I am using also a PC (now Mac) and many external hardware synths, real instruments, and self-made noise boxes for music production. When Polyend announced the Tracker, a dream came true. I always wondered why nobody built a hardware tracker before since it’s such a genius concept of sequencing notes and programming fx. The Polyend Tracker is currently the heart of my dawless setup and is sequencing my hardware synths via Midi while playing sampled sounds at the same time. The tracker is also perfect for arranging complete song structures for live performances which I am using now to play together with a drummer.”
