Scene: Magniz – Buttons

"I use the Tracker as a standalone piece at the moment. It’s a fantastic challenge to create full songs within the moderate limits of the instrument and it’s a very appealing and fun approach to making music."

“I have been making music for almost 30 years now and the majority of it with trackers. It started with the Soundtracker on my brother’s Amiga, then Fast Tracker, Scream Tracker, and Impulse Tracker on PC. After a creative break, I worked with Jeskola Buzz and that was already much more powerful. I only made the transition to a ‘traditional’ DAW with Ableton Live about 8 years ago. I never really missed the tracker and I had many years of classical piano lessons as a kid but I never got accustomed to recording myself playing stuff. I always think I can do this much more precisely by clicking my notes into the piano roll. So to this day, you can get me out of the tracker but not the tracker out of me.

And although I made a lot of music over the recent years, the whole process of music-making bored me recently. I missed the fun jamming, focussed hours of playing just with sounds, being in the flow.

When I first heard of the Polyend Tracker I was impressed by the design and that a company would create a hardware tracker these days. But the price tag made me disregard it. Until I saw it again recently and I remembered the fun I had with trackers – the time just seemed right. After playing with it for a few hours I was hooked and I know now that the price is spot on. It’s a dedicated piece of hardware with software that is continuously updated. It makes me focus on just the music, it’s so small I can work with it everywhere. And the controls, the layout, and features are so well thought through, it’s super-easy to find your way around in no time. But it still has plenty of details to be explored every time you use it.”

“With the song “Buttons’ I was inspired by the 90’s House, Garage, and even a little bit of Speed/UK Garage phase. Fast house beats with those weighty basslines. I hope you like it and with the project file, you can check how I structured it and made this otherworldly vocal effect.”

“Still and again the most fascinating feature for me is that all this precise programming leads to a lot of unpredictable results. I’m changing little details here and there and suddenly this whole new sound or groove is there very experimental stuff. It feels more like working inside the musical piece than on it.

I use the Tracker as a standalone piece at the moment. It’s a fantastic challenge to create full songs within the moderate limits of the instrument and it’s a very appealing and fun approach to making music. But I also already have an eye on a few additional devices that I’d love to connect to the Tracker – seems like it will stay the centerpiece of my creative endeavors for a long time.”
