I ERROR – Making an Album with Hardware

Samuel Martins Coelho is a classically trained musician with a passion for experimental electronic music. As I Error, he blends worlds with the assistance of hardware, including the Polyend Tracker to create thoughtful, moving compositions. Learn more about how and why he created his latest release, Unselfing, in this week's "What's Up".

Hi Samuel,  you recently released a new electronic album as I ERROR. Could you tell us a little bit about the album?

My latest album, Unselfing, is the second release from my electronic project I ERROR. Inspired by Iris Murdoch’s concept of “unselfing”—stepping away from our ego and daily worries to observe with genuine attention—this album represents a deep dive into moments of clarity and focusing on what is truly essential.

While my debut album, I ERROR, explored various phases of my musical journey and redefined failure as a transformative opportunity, Unselfing takes this evolution further. Each track is designed to help the listener disconnect from distractions and simply listen, offering a direct and unpretentious experience that captures the essence of a pause.

Released on Invisível, Unselfing not only maintains the experimental spirit of the project but also invites you to find space for a more focused, contemplative listening experience.

How did you incorporate Polyend gear into this project?

My musical journey began as a violinist and composer with a strong classical background, and it was only later that I became interested in and be involved with electronic music. Integrating Polyend gear into my project has been a game changer. What I love about Polyend is the way it challenges me to find new methods of composition, pushing my musical boundaries in unexpected ways. The intuitive interface and innovative features of the Polyend instruments allow me to merge the precision and structure of my classical training with the spontaneity and experimental nature of electronic soundscapes. This combination not only enriches my creative process but also invites a constant dialogue between tradition and innovation, ultimately shaping the distinctive character of my music.

UNSELFING is a masterfully produced track with lots of space to hear the various elements. With all the options you can use to produce music today, it is easy to create cluttered, messy songs. Do you have any advice on creating clean, clear tracks?

When it comes to creating clean, clear tracks, I believe the key is to work with tools that feel natural and intuitive. Despite the variety of brands available today, some resonate more with the way you work. For instance, my violin is custom-made by a luthier to perfectly match my specifications, and I’ve found a similar connection with my Polyend gear. Its workflow is incredibly natural for me, which is a huge motivator in my creative process.

What is your biggest workflow hack or tip with the Polyend Gear?

One of my biggest workflow hacks with the Polyend Tracker is making full use of its performance features, especially the roll and arpeggiator functions. Even with a seemingly simple sound, these tools allow me to transform it in ways I never imagined. The roll function enables me to introduce variations and rhythmic twists, while the arpeggiator automatically generates intricate, evolving patterns. This means I can take a basic element and expand it into a rich, dynamic texture without overcomplicating the process.

Additionally, by integrating these features with the Tracker’s performance mode, I can manipulate my tracks live in real-time. This approach not only keeps my workflow spontaneous and creative but also ensures that each part of the composition has its own space, maintaining clarity and focus throughout the track. Overall, it’s about harnessing the natural, intuitive design of the Polyend Tracker to explore new sonic territories and push the boundaries of what a simple sound can become.
